VLC 3.0 Grabs a Major Upgrade Across All Platforms, Brings Chromecast Support, Picture-in-Picture mode, Android Auto and More

VLC, the World’s most used media player that plays everything thrown at it has just got bigger and better as the company has launched a major upgrade to its media player across all platforms including Windows (from Windows XP to Windows 10), Mac (v10.7 to 10.13) , iOS (from v7 to 11), Android (v2.3 to 8.1), Ubuntu and Chromebooks.

The latest update marks the app version as 3.0.0 and is the first version from the “Vetinari” branch. the highlight features of the app includes –

  • VLC 3.0 “Vetinari” is a new major update of VLC.
  • VLC 3.0 activates hardware decoding by default, to get 4K and 8K playback!
  • It supports 10bits and HDR
  • VLC supports 360 video and 3D audio, up to Ambisoncics 3rd order
  • Allows audio passthrough for HD audio codecs
  • Can stream to Chromecast devices, even in formats not supported natively
  • Can play Blu-Ray Java menus: BD-J
  • VLC supports browsing of local network drives and NAS

  • HDMI passthrough for Audio HD codecs, like E-AC3, TrueHD or DTS-HD

Coming to Android, VLC 3.0 has added Chromecast support, and now includes HEVC hardware decoding using MediaCodec. it is now also available for Android TV, Chromebooks & Samsung DeX and now supports  Picture-in-Picture mode with Playlist files detection.
