Samsung Bixby is a digital assistant just like Cortana, Siri and Google Voice Assistant available currently in the market. it is developed by Samsung and was first introduced along with the Samsung Galaxy S8 & S8+ during the company’s “Samsung Galaxy Unpacked 2017” event which was held earlier this week on March 29.
Samsung has a conceptually new philosophy to the problem: instead of humans learning how the machine interacts with the world (a reflection of the abilities of designers), it is the machine that needs to learn and adapt to us. The interface must be natural and intuitive enough to flatten the learning curve regardless of the number of functions being added. With this new approach, Samsung has employed artificial intelligence, reinforcing deep learning concepts to the core of our user interface designs. Bixby is the ongoing result of this effort.
The company stated that Samsung Bixby, is Fundamentally different from other voice assistants which are available currently in the market and offers a deeper experience with its proficiency in these three aspects:
You can activate Bixby by a key which will be located on the side of the company’s upcomig device. thus, eliminating the confusion to activate it through a voice interface and in the process making it feel easier and more comfortable by simple giving commands.
instead of taking multiple steps to make a call – turning on and unlocking the phone, looking for the phone application, clicking on the contact bar to search for the person that you’re trying to call and pressing the phone icon to start dialing – you will be able to do all these steps with one push of the Bixby button and a simple command.
Bixby talks : With Bixby, getting things done has never been easier. Bixby knows your phone’s apps and how to use them. Plus, you can talk, tap or type, because Bixby understands it all
Bixby sees : Bixby lives inside your Camera, Gallery and Internet to give you a deeper understanding of what you’re looking at. Just tap the Vision icon in your viewfinder and Bixby will serve up contextual icons: translation, QR code detection, landmark recognition or shopping.
Bixby recommends : Quickly access your favorite apps and content in a tap or swipe. Bixby learns your routine, so you’ll always have the right content ready when you need it. From your recent messages and upcoming events, to your next Uber ride and daily news—Bixby pulls the most important information from different apps, so you can accomplish more from a single screen.
Bixby reminds : Get reminded when and where you need to. Bixby is built into your favorite apps, so setting up reminders based on time and location is easy. Reminders can include specific content like a video you want to watch when you get home. Bixby will be our first step on a journey to completely open up new ways of interacting with your phone. At the launch of the Galaxy S8, a subset of preinstalled applications will be Bixby-enabled. This set will continue to expand over time. Our plan is to eventually release a tool (in SDK) to enable third-party developers to make their applications and services Bixby-enabled easily.
The company said they’re working on a plan to release tools which will help third-party app developers to integrate their services into Bixby. the Samsung Galaxy S8 will come pre-installed with a batch of Bixby enabled applications.
Samsung also stated that they have just started with smartphones and there are plans to bring it to all the Samsung devices. In the future you would be able to control your air conditioner or TV through Bixby. Since the digital assistant will be implemented in the cloud, as long as the device has a internet connection and simple circuitry to receive voice inputs, it will be able to connect with Bixby.
Editors note : you would required Samsung Account log-in and data connection to use the Bixby and the service availability may vary by region. some feature are supported by Korean and other language will be served
